Emulating a Professional Photography

Writer's picture: Emma FramptonEmma Frampton

I believe this is my best image as it successfully emulates the raw energy of Danielle Levitt's depiction of the punk scene in LA while showcasing the unique characteristics of the Philadelphia punk scene. Levitt's image of a guitarist leaping over someone's head with a guitar conveys the chaotic and expressive spirit of punk culture. Similarly, my black-and-white image features a bassist, fast drummer, and rolling vocalist capturing the intensity of a live punk performance. The decision to shoot in black and white enhances the gritty atmosphere.

The most challenging aspect of this assignment was timing the shot to encapsulate the the performance. Live shows are unpredictable, with lots of movement and low lighting, making it difficult to get this shot. In the future, I plan to create stronger images by paying closer attention to lighting and angles. Experimenting more with different perspectives and being more deliberate with my framing could have made this image more powerful. If I could go back in time I would make the musicians more central to the photo as a there is a lot of noise in the image around them with wires and the background.
